In Order entry via picking slip function, a current ISBN that becomes out of stock is sent to the backorder system. The transaction is stored there until new stock becomes available, at which point the order is released to the system. The release date of the ISBN is determined by the Release date field. An order’s release may also be generated through the use of the release order function.
The posting of the customer balances occurs after the goods are picked and dispatched and the invoice has been produced.
Orders can be entered directly to backorder when it is known in advance that there is insufficient stock available for the required order. This order type also allows for the forthcoming releases of an item or book. When a current item becomes out of stock or is not yet released all orders for that item are entered directly to backorder. The items remain there until they need to be released (release date) or are in stock.
